BILLY AND CHARLEY - 19TH CENTURY FANTASY PENDANT - 'ARM AND KEY'

19th century AD. A lead badge with pelleted suspension loop. Obv: a radiate crowned facing bust with transverse sword with pseudo-legend and spurious date 1301. Rev: mailed fist holding key with pseudo-legend. 70 grams, 90 mm.

Condition
As made, complete with the originally applied 'fake' patination and rare thus.

Provenance
Ex Doggett family; ex Lord Holland of Holland House, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1773-1840). This item, together with the Tutbury Hoard pennies and other coins offered elsewhere in this sale, passed to William ('Edgar') Doggett, the librarian at Holland House.

Literature
See website http://www.mernick.org.uk/B&C/years/1301.htm for this type and general information; George Clinch, Handbook of English Antiquities, fig. 178 (this design) and for general information.

Footnotes
Sometimes known as the Shadwell Dock forgeries, these badges, with other articles, were the subject of much debate in the 19th century. Learned antiquaries of the day were fooled.
