HARAPPAN BICONICAL BOWL

Circa 2600–1900 BC. A globular biconical vessel in cream fabric with a low basal ring and vestigial rim, its upper section decorated in dark brown with a running series of peepal leaf motifs within borders of four vertical lines; the rim and equator in dark brown. Ceramic, 510 grams, 175 mm diameter.

Condition
Very fine condition, minor chipping to rim.

Provenance
Ex Alex Szolin, ex Cambell collection, 1970's.

Literature
See Satyawadi, S. Proto-Historic Pottery of the Indus Valley Civilisation.

Footnotes
The peepal tree was the dominant sacred tree of ancient India, in whose branches many supernatural beings were supposed to reside. After the demise of Harappan culture in about 1,900 BC, the motif was no longer used on ceramics.
