TUDOR BARON WILLIAM RUSSELL INSCRIBED HAWKING RING

Circa 16th-17th century AD. A vervel or hawking ring comprising a heater-shaped plate bearing the incised design of a stag on a lambrequin; attached to the rear of this plate, a flat-section ring with incised text S·WILL·RVSSELL. Silver, 0.95 grams, 10.30 mm.

Condition
Extremely fine condition, complete. Extremely rare.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Footnotes
The owner is probably to be identified with Sir William, 1st Baron Russell of Thornhaugh (b. circa 1557, d. 1613). Sir William was active in several military campaigns including those in the Netherlands and Ireland, and organised the defence of western England against the threatened Spanish invasion. Copies of associated research documentation is included with this item.
