GREEK APULO-CORINTHIAN HELMET
5th-4th century BC

A decorated bronze helmet with full mask, carination to the sides and rear, rear flange with attachment lug, narrow lentoid eyeholes and vertical slits, lanceolate nasal, repoussé bow-shaped brow-ridge, incised geometric ornament to the cheeks, three applied plume-holders to the crest; mounted on a custom-made stand. 2.3 kg, 45cm including stand (17 3/4").

Condition
Fine condition, some restoration. A scarce type.

Provenance
The property of a North West London collector; previously in the L.v.L. collection, Rhineland, Germany; formed between the 1960s and 1980s. Accompanied by a report of metallurgic analytical report number 109174/555, written by Metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford.

Literature
See Born, H. Die Helme des Hephaistos. Handwerk und Technik griescchischer Bronzen in Olympia, München, 2009 for discussion.

Footnotes
The Corinthian helmet was depicted on more sculpture than any other helmet; it seems the Greeks romantically associated it with glory and the past. The Pseudo-Corinthian helmet type was developed in Magna Græcia, Italy, from the Corinthian model. The eye-holes and nasal were decorative rather than functional because the helmet was worn on the top of the head with the lower edge resting on the brow.
