3/4" (5 grams, 22mm).
A circular gold pendant with suspension loop to the top; at the centre of the pendant is a equal armed cross with punched dot decoration which is repeated on the border; in the zones between the arms of the cross are animals in the "Trewhiddle Style," possibly relating to the animals associated with the four Evangelists.
PROVENANCE:
Ex Rhodes collection; property of the vendor's grandfather; acquired while travelling in Europe in the 1960s, thence by decent. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate.
FOOTNOTES:
The Trewhiddle style is named after a hoard found in a village in Cornwall that consisted of a silver cup, and several other silver and gold items, some of which were decorated in a distinctive animal pattern. The style has been recoginised in other items found in the United Kingdom, such as Aethelwulf ring now in the British Museum.
