Western Asiatic Amlash Lion Rhyton

1st millennium BC

A ceramic rhyton formed as a stylised lion with tubular body, applied legs underneath, applied ears and curved tail, short neck with everted rim to the back with surrounding incised mane decoration, the lion with fierce expression, gaping mouth and exposed canines, short spout to the back of the mouth, raised nasal ridge and round eyes. 438 grams, 18cm (7"). Very fine condition. Rare.

Property of a London gentleman; previously with central London gallery; acquired in the 1960s.
