BRONZE AGE AKKADIAN CEREMONIAL HOE

Circa 2,500-2,000 BC. A substantial bronze hoe cast in two main components: a columnar shaft with angled head section, flanked by two bird-head symbols and a flat, trapezoidal blade; the blade attached to the shaft with eight copper-alloy c-profile bands. Copper-alloy, 1.2 kg, 403 mm.

Condition
Extremely fine condition, complete. Excessively rare.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Footnotes
The method of affixing the blade to the shaft is unusual: the bands are forged onto the sides of the blade at each end. The joint would not be very durable if the item were used for agricultural purposes. Therefore a ceremonial use is adduced. The fas or hoe formed part of the symbolic assemblage of the Egyptian pharaohs.
